The reality of peak oil will see properties classified into two types in the near future, according to Simon Fraser University professor Anthony Perl.
One will be properties from which owners can get to work, leisure activities, and services predominantly by car. The other offers alternatives to the automobile such as public transit, biking, and walking.
“The one that is accessible without a car will have a higher value,” Perl told the Georgia Straight in a telephone interview during which the director of SFU’s urban studies program tracked changes in oil prices with a ticker he keeps on his desk.

It might be the best-kept secret in the state. And you can check it out at the public library; that is, the public libraries in Coventry, Lincoln and Scituate –– just in time for fishing season.
Tucked in among the stacks of books are cabinets stuffed with fishing equipment: rods, reels, tackle boxes, hooks, lures, sinkers and floats. If you fancy taking a youngster or two out for a leisurely day of fishing without an outlay of money to get started, here’s your chance.
All you need is a library card.
Three branches in the Cooperating Libraries Automated Network, CLAN, allow patrons to borrow a full complement of fishing equipment.

Description:
Portland, Ore. June 11th, 2008—Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, who completed a rigorous training program led by former Vice President Al Gore, will present and educate about issues and solution surrounding global warming on June 11th at St. Francis of Assisi Church's Dining Hall.
Bill was part of a select group of 50 individuals chosen to receive intensive training by Gore and a team of renowned scientists about issues surrounding global warming. Each received technical training to become experienced presenters of a version of Gore’s computer-based slide show, which became the basis of his best-selling book and documentary film, “An Inconvenient Truth.”
“Bill Bradbury is an outstanding example of the millions of Americans who have been energized by the call to action on the climate crisis,” said Gore. “Bill is making presentations in and around Oregon discussing how individuals and businesses, schools, and other organizations can be a major part of the solution to the growing crisis of global warming.”
Sallie Schullinger-Krause, the Oregon Environmental Council’s Global Warming Program Director notes that “Bill Bradbury has become Oregon’s leader in global warming outreach. Not only has he tailored his presentation to include the very real effects of climate change on Oregon but he has developed tools to help his audiences become part of the solution.”
A discussion will follow about the intersection of peak oil and global warming mitigation.

A tonne of ore from a gold mine produces just 5 grams (0.18 ounce) of gold on average, whereas a tonne of discarded mobile phones can yield 150 grams (5.3 ounce) or more, according to a study by Yokohama Metal Co Ltd, another recycling firm.
The same volume of discarded mobile phones also contains around 100 kg (220 lb) of copper and 3 kg (6.6 lb) of silver, among other metals.
