Copperative Farm?

After some preliminary discussion in the food security thread, I want to open this thread up to the idea of securing arable land near to Portland. I think some people have already decided to make the move to secure rural land for food production, but many more of us are committed to staying in Portland but are nervous about food security down the road.

Once petroleum gets scarce, the commercial production of food, the trucking of food and operating large stores with associated energy costs will get increasingly difficult. Food prices will go up and up and we are likely to see scarcity at some point.

Due to that fact, I think a lot of people here are devoted to ideas such as back yard gardens, CSAs, organic farms, and growing local. (By the way, go see "The Real Dirt on Farmer John" at Hollywood....great movie!)

Many of the people I have talked to are interested in trying to secure food production by buying a plot of arable land. I am interested in the idea of collectively buying a piece of land; thus sharing the costs of mortgage, the burden of farm labor, building costs, harvetsing, etc.

The difficulty in collectively purchasing and cultivating land cooperatively may be overshadowed by the need to develop a feasable plan for preparing for post Peak Oil. If anyone has any thoughts on this, please feel free to share. Thanks,

Jon
