*Background*

Graywater is water derived from household use, excluding water with human body wastes (known as blackwater).  Approximately 65% of water used for interior uses can be recycled as graywater.  In Portland, this equals about 68 gallons of water per person per day that could be used for exterior irrigation, if graywater became legally accessible to Oregonians.

The leveling and relatively imminent decline in the world’s fossil fuel production lags somewhat behind global warming in the process of societal awakening. Portland’s Peak Oil Task Force did some fine work in highlighting the issues we’ll all face as energy supplies become tighter and much more expensive. Their report contained a number of useful recommendations and preparatory work for the City’s consideration.

OilCrash, produced and directed by award-winning European journalists and filmmakers Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack, tells the story of how our civilization’s addiction to oil puts it on a collision course with geology. Compelling, intelligent, and highly entertaining, the film visits with the world’s top experts and comes to a startling, but logical conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled.
