New process blog
Submitted by Emily on January 31, 2006 - 4:30pm.I'm Emily Pollard, an organizer with Portland Peak Oil since last April. This is a blog attempting to record the ongoing development of our grassroots, community-building, localization group as it helps to prepare the Portland metro are for peak oil.
I've received requests from all over the country asking for advice on how to start and conduct a local group preparing for peak oil. This blog is for those folks, as well as Portland Peak Oil participants who are curious about what's going on "behind the scenes" of PPO's organizing.
I will be blogging here a few times per week or more. Please bookmark this page and keep reading!

Derrick Jensen Q and A

Mythmedia Presents: Q and A with Derrick Jensen
Wednesday December 19th, 7pm @ Disjecta (230 E. Burnside)
Advance Tickets $15, Door $18 (tickets @ www.mythmedia.org)
“Civilization is not and can never be sustainable.”
This is the first of fourteen premises in author Derrick Jensen’s revolutionary book Endgame. For the last decade Jensen has written articles and books concerning the problems of civilization and what we must do about them. In Endgame Jensen challenges the values and tactics of some of histories most influential pacifists, the sustainability™ movement and the painful games we play with those in power while trying to save what is left of our environment. The last time Jensen came to Portland, the Q and A went late into the night and ended with many questions unanswered. This time around Jensen is throwing out the reading and going straight to the Q and A!

The Birth of a Meme
Submitted by 2020Oregon on January 14, 2007 - 11:10am.It was election night, November 7, 2006. Our local informal neighborhood salon of the intelligentsia had been involved in a political campaign, and here we were watching the results come in on the huge big-screen projected TV at campaign headquarters. Our candidate did not win, but we were all gratified by the shifting of the balance nonetheless. As part of his acceptance speech, Governor Ted said something along the lines that "...Oregonians understand global warming is an Oregon problem." That night our meme was born.

With numerous terminals almost nearly completed, reinforcing and expanding supply diversity will ensure you tackle current capacity problems and meet the required LNG demand. From the LNG vessel to the pipeline, your supply strategy is important to ensure the North American market remains competitive. This includes determining which supply agreements will make you the most profit at the right price, which storage solutions will expand your capacity and which quality of gas is going to serve your pipeline.

A collective sigh of indifference
Submitted by Chaster on July 31, 2006 - 3:04pm.Sometimes, I just have to step back and let people fall down...
I've been talking to friends about Peak Oil now for a year or so, so most of them are aware of the problem - at least, they can't claim they've never heard of it.
The response? A collective, "oh well"...
What's sad is listening to the same people talk about buying new SUV's (the Honda Pilot seems to be quite popular with my friends), new Sports Cars (one friend just bought a V8 Camaro, another wants to get a Supra or 3000GT), and other oil sucking vehicles....And so life goes on in our Happy Motoring Country...
Frankly, I give up. We went to "An Inconvenient Truth" with a friend of ours a few weeks ago. She came out of the movie saying "Wow, that movie made me want to DO SOMETHING!".. Two weeks later, I asked her "so, have you done anything?" She answered, "well, no. Actually, I've been driving more lately because I'm house sitting a friends' home..." Although she did counsel her sister to buy a new Saab or Audi (despite my pleas for her to buy something which got better gas mileage and at least was dependable - which neither Saab's nor Audi's are known for..)

- a mailing list generally has a faster turn around time then people thinking to check a website.
- This is for administration and management of Portland Peak Oil events (Wednesdays at St. Francis, ...) getting the speaker's bureau online, .... Please only subscribe if you want to be involved on a fairly regular basis.
Ideas for May 24th and the 31st Wednesdays?
Submitted by Emily on May 8, 2006 - 8:37am.We didn't have a formal Outreach meeting in May, so we still need to schedule what we're going to do at St. Francis the evenings of May 24th and the 31st. We could show a movie (which one?), have a speaker (any ideas?) or discussion.
Please comment with suggestions. Thanks.

Peak Oil Awareness Introductory Training
(read more about City Repair's 10-day Village Building Convergence)
This training is meant to raise awareness of something that is known by many people but discussed by far too few – the issue that is being called Peak Oil. Included will be: facts about fossil fuels' decreasing availability and increasing production cost, a discussion of the changes we are going to have to make regarding how we live with or without oil (and other increasingly unaffordable fuels), and what each of us can do in the short and long term.
PPO benefit at Red and Black Cafe?
Submitted by Emily on May 4, 2006 - 8:26am.Received this message the other day to our email box. This could be a really fun opportunity! Anyone interested in working on it? Let's do it! -Emily
----------------------------------------------------
We're working to host benefits for groups we would like to support at the Red and Black Cafe on Sundays. We can be a bit flexible on the starting time for the event, and if Sunday really won't work for you, we might be able to make another day work.
If you would like to hold a benefit at the cafe, there are things that we need to touch base on. We have some sound levels that need to be respected. We have times that we need to start after or finish by. We might be able to help out with resources such as a video projector if you'd like to show movies, or microphone stands. We'd be open to other ideas outside of the normal benefit box.
Please let me know if this is something that you would be interested in doing, if you have a date you would like to reserve and if you'd need help getting bands to play, flyering or otherwise.
Therapy for this Modern Day Cassandra
Submitted by Chaster on April 20, 2006 - 9:09pm.Well, I've joined this group to kind of get some support. I've gone around and told most of my friends about Peak Oil and the response has been....disappointing. Everyone pretty much scoffs at the idea or just shrugs and says "that's terrible, but oh well, la de da da.."
Hence, the title of my first EVER Blog Entry - Therapy for this Modern Day Cassandra (Cassandra was the greek mythological character who was able to see the future but was cursed by Apollo so that nobody would believe her predictions).
The Death of our Civilization will not be from Violence, it will be from APATHY.

Good news: Got our Solar Hot Water heater installed yesterday. Woohoo!
Better News: Our 4KW PV array should be going in next!
Other stuff I'm working on - remodeling our home (yeah, bought a fixer-upper, but I figure learning the skills and acquiring tools for general handyman stuff is a "good thing"). Also gathering parts for my motorcycle conversion to electric power. All in all, makin' progress...

Agenda for March Outreach meeting
Submitted by Emily on March 26, 2006 - 9:52pm.Now's the time to start compiling points for the agenda for the March Outreach meeting on Mon. 3/27 7pm at 1236 SE Pine.
The Outreach group is engaged in projects having to do with spreading the word about peak oil. We identify and organize tabling opportunities, plan the third and fourth Wed. evenings of each month, address public presentation requests, and brainstorm creative actions we can take to get the word out to the public about preparing and conserving as the end of cheap energy draws near.
Here are a couple points to address at our upcoming meeting:
- Tabling for Michael Klare Illahee lecture 4/21
- Tabling shifts for 4/22 City Repair's Earth Day event (Emily, Tatjana, Misi, Theressa, Jennifer, etc.)
- Finalizing plans for potluck gathering on 3/29
- Reviewing peakers for Wed. nights in April
- Presentations to The Pangea Project (Emily will fill in)
- Planning day at library on 5/6 from 10-2:30 (John Kaufmann presenting; film showing)
Peak Oil Posters
Submitted by cleancoalfuels on March 21, 2006 - 3:22pm.Hi all. I recently bought 50 of the peak oil posters from http://www.oilposter.org/.
I am using them as handouts for politicians and citizens groups in the areas where we are developing our plants, but I have some extras, so I would be happy to donate 10 of them to the group for use in community outreach activities.
They would be ideal for schools or high-traffic community centers.
Do with them what you think is best to spread the word.
I will bring them by the Wednesday biodiesel meeting at St Francis.

VBC workshop?
Submitted by Emily on March 13, 2006 - 5:32pm.Village Building Convergence 6 will be here soon and City Repair is taking applications for free afternoon workshops as part of the VBC. Last May, two folks from Portland Peak Oil presented an overhead peak oil 101 slideshow that was well attended and well done.
I think we should definitely do a similar workshop again this May. Perhaps another relevant workshop too? Thoughts?
Reflections on group structure
Submitted by trippytoads on March 13, 2006 - 1:20pm.I'd like to first start off with my introduction. My name is Todd and I'm new to the portland peak oil group. After attending the meeting on March 8th I started to try and envision how a group could meet our goals. In this thread I'm trying to focus on what that might look like from a logistical stand point. I feel that the mechanics of this change should be strengthened as a beginning goal.
First Assumptions ( about basic structural needs ):
- A group that plans to influence and instigate this amount of change must organized financially. We should expect and plan for having donations and external support. We will need a financial management system. Perhaps there will be a symmetry between the power structure and the financial structure.
- Intuitively we know that no one solution will change the whole condition of our communities. Any hope of progress must be supported on many levels and areas of participation. Gardens are great but they work better with education, and use.
Email from Diggable City folks
Submitted by Emily on March 13, 2006 - 9:45am.Here's a recent email exchange between Diggable City and me. I'm going to email Amanda back and try to book them for the third Wednesday of May (17th).

Hi Emily,
Thanks for the invitation! I'm glad some of you were able to come see the film, and enjoyed it enough to invite us to present. We'd be happy to come talk to your group and show our movie. Either of the May dates works well for us. The movie is about 22 minutes long and we can respond to questions or lead a discussion afterwards. Just let us know when you'd like us there.

Hi everyone at Diggable City!
I'm Emily Pollard of local grassroots group Portland Peak Oil. A few of us from the group had the pleasure of attending your wonderful movie and discussion on January 28th at 5th Avenue Cinemas.
I'm writing to see if a few of you would be interested in presenting your film and answering questions at one of our Wednesday evenings. We hold free and open events each Wed. night in inner SE Portland. There would be tremendous interest in your project - Diggable City comes up in our peak oil preparedness and localization conversations all the time. Typically, about 40-80 people come each week and hundreds more are on our announcements list.

Tabling on Earth Day
Submitted by Emily on March 10, 2006 - 4:20pm.Since the Business group agreed on the cost, I've sent a check for $30 off to City Repair to table at their 2006 Earth Day celebration on April 22nd (10am-10pm). Here's what we get:
$30 - Basic Booth Fee (includes 8 foot table, 2 chairs, bring own tent)
This event is more than a month away, but I wanted to post so those of you interested in volunteering could comment and we could start setting up tabling shifts. We should probably have 2-3 people at the table at any given time throughout the day.
We'll make sure those who have never tabled with Portland Peak Oil are paired up with someone who has. In my experience, it's really fun and gratifying to interact with the public about energy issues, localization, and getting involved with PPO.
Post a comment if you're interested in tabling that day!

David,
Thanks for contacting us. I've heard a lot of positive things about your presentations.
We would definitely be interested in having you come down! We hold events every Wednesday night from 7-9pm and the earliest dates that are open are April 19th and April 26th. Does one of those evenings work for you? If not, perhaps the 3rd or 4th Wednesday in May?
Reframing Peak Oil to something more understandable
Submitted by nw_randallscott on March 9, 2006 - 8:59pm.Reframing Peak Oil to something more understandable
I recently read an article about why Democrats are losing out to the term "War on Terror". This is not meant to be a political post, rather a way to expand the consciousness of people faster and let them see clearly much faster when we are working on neighborhood outreach.
So, here is the jist of the article:
When progressives talk about ‘framing’ a political debate, they often confuse ‘frame’ with ‘message.’ They want framing to be a quick path to victory, a magic bullet delivered in the form of a perfect talking point that brings the opposition to its knees.
In fact, framing is not a magic bullet, but a set of tools that empowers us to take control of a debate--first by seeing the broad ideas trapping us in a losing position, and then by re-framing the issues in moral terms that speak to ideals of the American people.
Framing, in other words, makes us better readers, better listeners, and better participants in day-to-day politics, thereby enabling us to become the kind of citizens that are most effective in the culture of media driven politics. A key area where the Democrats need to use framing is national security.

Back by popular demand! We had a really fun letter writing party last November which resulted in over 35 letters and cards sent out and personal responses from city officials and local environmental organizations. We come together to write letters to politicians, members of the local media, and environmental organizations conveying the message of peak oil and encouraging preparation action from these leaders.
We're having our second letter writing party this weekend. We're not talking multi-page letters here, just a few paragraphs can be very powerful. It's been shown that personal written notes are the most effective form of activist communication (as compared to form emails and postcards) and that's what we're going to do.
All you need to do is show up! A few of us on the Outreach team are organizing this and we're hoping to make this as fun and easy an event as possible. We'll provide cards, stationery, paper, pens, stamps, contacts/ addresses, "talking points" - facts and ideas to use as writing springboards, yummy snacks and drinks, music, and good company! Bring a snack or beverage if you like.

My intention is to explain the PO basics and why a local response is necessary and what it would look like. The goal would be to create a neighborhood level discussion and familiarize neighbors with each other on a preparedness level.
I would love to hear feedback on other approaches, methods, or if this has been done before - please share the experience.
Specifically - what do we ask of the Neighborhood Association?
Turning the Willy Week article into something more
Submitted by nw_randallscott on February 14, 2006 - 10:49pm.I wrote to Senator Wyden tonight about the upcoming Willamette Week article and asked him to pubicly address Oregonians about our concerns. Here is what I wrote:
Senator Wyden,
My name is Randy White, and I am writing to inform you that in a few weeks, the Willamette Week will be running a front page story about a growing number of Portlanders taking action to prepare the Pacific Northwest for what we feel are impending energy and economic crashes.
We are concerned that enough evidence and research exist to merit making emergency preparations in the event of catastrophic market collapses.
Our group of citizens, called Portland Peak Oil, are local leaders in community education regarding preparedness. Our world view is that America's (and the world's) energy situation is highly unstable, thus economic and ecological sustainability should be a secondary goal to emergency preparedness in Oregon.
I understand and am involved with efforts to balance Oregon's economic growth with better stewardship of the earth. I firmly believe that Oregon can and will take the lead as our nation's most advanced state in regards to alternative energy, food security, transportation and economic vitality. I know with smart decisions we can create it much faster than our current rate of development, however...
Out of touch...
Submitted by Grandma Misi on February 7, 2006 - 2:11pm.Wow, I've been so out of touch lately. Out of touch with my dearly beloved PPO group (hurrah and huzzah to all of you hard workin' folks carryin' the torch!) and out of touch with the world it would seem.
Here I am at almost the top of a mountain (2100 feet, get snow pretty regulary and I'm only 40 miles from Portland). I'm 8 miles up a dirt/gravel road off of Hwy 26 and through the tiny town of Buxton (don't blink, there's not even a post office and the local community hall is for sale, just one church and some farms). Even my mail box is 8 miles away from the house, down in the town, served by the "mail lady" who works out of her home.
In some ways this seems like the perfect place for post-peak living: away from the madding crowd (and it will be getting "madder" yet soon, eh?). There won't be too many people that can find my garden (when I finally get one going). Got the cleanest, best tasting water ever from a spring on the property. Since we're at the top up here, and there are only two houses somewhat "above" here, there shouldn't be much pollution, I think? Most importantly we're not dependent on any "systems" to provide the water. The house is even on only a gravity fed system, no power needed - doesn't make for very forceful showers tho, tee hee.

Theressa is awaiting a call and/or email from Robin Canaday about her costs for making a sign. Now that Mike is on vacation, we should take control of this project ourselves. Therefore, it was decided that:
We want to have a professional sign done. Each one of us (and other members) can kick in $10-20.00 to help pay for the sign.

Willamette Week peak oil story - need interviewees
Submitted by Emily on February 2, 2006 - 11:56am.Portland Peak Oil has recently been contacted by a writer with the Willamette Week - Ian Demsky. The paper is interested in doing a cover story on Portlanders preparing for peak oil.
I spoke with Ian this morning on the phone and he has a special request for the group. He's looking to interview folks who were not necessarily environmentalists or activists before learning about peak oil, but who have
made major changes in their lives to prepare since learning about peak oil. You know, an case study angle to move beyond the usual "Portland greenie". Here's his message:
----------------------------------------------------------------
We're exploring doing a cover story on how ready Portland would be for the scenario spelled out by the peak oil proponents. We're looking for some local folks that heve been involved with this issue. Also, peak oil seems to
dovetail well with Portland's already green consciouness -- but maybe there are some folks out there who weren't very green to start with, but peak oil came as a dramatic wake up call?
