High-schools outreach

Is PPO doing any outreach to high-schools?

I got my younger sister in NYC a copy of "end of suburbia" and her "Progresive Student Awareness" school club will be viewing it... may be they will even advertise it around the school so the kids who are not in the club will find out.
I'm itching to find out how this goes.
Can the importance of informing the people who are about to start making independent desicions be overstated? Also their minds are not as gnarled as those of the older folks may be.

Excellent Idea

I wish that each school would start showing this film to kids 13 and over. They need a passion to pour into, and kids can put amazing energy into movements. We just need savvy science and civics teachers (still teach that stuff?) to show their classes and help the kids channel their energy and spread the knowledge.

I want to remind everyone here that you are Portland Peak Oil.

If you're interested in getting copies of "End of Suburbia" into high schools, come to our monthly Outreach meeting and organize a small group and action plan to do this. You'll be supported and have 300+ like-minded people to tap into to get your idea in motion.

Walk the talk

why, thank you Emily, i am PPO...
an "insider" is ussualy key... so, does anyone know a teacher in a PDX high-school who may be receptive? Point me in the right direction and i'll do the rest of the talking and walking.

hmmm... my house-mate is a high school teacher... but he is not receptive... may be i do to him what is done to TVs when they are not receptive?

unreceptive?

HA! ..you mean banging them around a bit? That always worked for my TV. Or could you rearrange his antenna? What does he consume in the way of media? It's altogether scary that a teacher is not receptive to learning something about our world? What does he teach?

As far as teachers go, I'd suggest social studies/geography/history and earth science teachers should be most able to incorporate peak oil into their lessons. Perhaps a presentation is needed to the PPS board meeting - which are broadcast on cable access by the way.

I'm ready to help with this.

...but poetic

My "unreceptive" housemate teaches poetry... it's a part time gig but i guess enough to be called a teacher.

Do you know how to get in touch with the PPS (whatever that stands for)?

Portland Public Schools (PPS)

I would definitely be interested in being a part of any PPO group that wants to discuss the possibilities for taking this issue into high schools. I'm not in schools as much as I'd like, but I'm in them enough to know some teachers who would at least be open to the possibilities.
