At the tail end of a press conference on renewable energy and global warming, Gov. Ted Kulongoski responded to a question on a resolution being debated in the House concerning the Iraq war.
Kulongoski said he hadn't read House Joint Resolution 9. But he does have opinions about the Iraq war and how the nation's leaders are talking about it.
"I just have a great frustration as to why we're having a difficulty addressing this issue in a very straight-forward conversation with the American people," he said. "And I think that conversation starts with, what is America's national interest in continuing in Iraq?"
The nation's interest, the governor continued, "surely cannot be about weapons of mass destruction or regime change or bringing democracy into the Middle East."
Ultimately, Kulongoski said, "it's about the very topic we're talking about today." Then, pounding his fist on the podium, he said, "It's about oil."
