Peak Oil in the news
Submitted by nellie on March 7, 2007 - 5:06pm.
The New York Times published an article Monday saying we don't have to worry about peak oil, since new recovery techniques mean we can recover much more oil from existing wells: Oil innovations pump new life into old wells by Jad Mouawad.
This response explaining oilfield structure, recovery techniques (and their relative newness) appeared on Energy Bulletin today: False reporting of peak oil by Byron W. King.
The article was covered in the March 5 Drumbeat at The Oil Drum (scroll down to the comments for responses/ analysis).
MetaFilter also ran a post on this article- though the post is by a PO skeptic, there are some excellent comments and analysis below: Peak Oil no more? Prophets of peak oil are being proven wrong as new technologies increase oil recovery rates. In fact, the entire peak oil theory might be based on flawed assumptions.
Chris Smith at Portland Transport posted an item yesterday about the Task Force report going to Council. Commenters there also referenced this NYT article, and there was a much higher level of PO denial comments in this Portland oriented forum: Peak Oil at Council.
