Conference Description:
Climate Experts, Policymakers and Mazamas discuss global warming at April 14 Melting Mountains Conference

Global warming is not just a topic for presidential candidates to debate. Locally, climate experts, politicians and mountain climbers are gathering to learn what is really happening to our mountains, what policy-makers are doing to address it, and what we can do as individuals to make a positive contribution.

Local mountaineering organization, the Mazamas, is hosting a “Melting Mountains Conference” on April 14, 2007 at its new facility, the Mazama Mountaineering Center. The conference will bring together a panel of research experts, environmental writers, agencies and local politicians to discuss the impact of global warming on mountains, the environment and our community.

Dr. Andrew Fountain, PSU glaciologist, will share a perspective gained from 25 years of studying the glaciers of the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Philip Mote, UW Climate Researcher, predicts changes in Northwest mountains and addresses how deeply emissions will need to be cut to stabilize our climate. Armed with data and photographs, you’ll see and hear the compelling arguments of climate change and its impacts.

Oregon State Representative Ben Cannon, Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder and Portland City Commissioner Dan Saltzman will speak on efforts at the state, regional and city level to offset global warming.

Patrick Mazza, co-author of award-winning Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change, shares actions we can individually take to move towards sustainability.

Jan Schaeffer of the Energy Trust of Oregon will share incentive programs to help move our community toward the low carbon diet of the future.
