Hi, all,
From the Peak Oil meetings I attended, this group is interested in practical alternatives to expensive energy.
"Rocket Stoves," or more properly "Rocket Mass Heaters," are a super-efficient, super-clean way to heat a space using a very small amount of wood fuel and producing very little smoke. You can literally grow your own fuel on a 1/4 acre urban lot. The stove is a hybrid masonry and j-tube stove, which can be built into an attractive bench or bed, or installed along a wall or room divider for inconspicuous warmth.
The workshop, listed here: http://trackersnw.com/html/pdx/themes/portland_natural_building.php
, offers not only hands-on actual building of a rocket stove, but also fire science, basic masonry, and simple techniques for building emergency heaters and Rumford fireplaces out of readily-available recycled and natural materials. (that is, Dirt and Junk.) There's a second workshop on earthen floors (great for passive solar additions) the following weekend.
We'll be using these marvelous earthen building techniques to beautify a new community resource: The Scout Pit, aka Oaks Education Center, a new TrackersNW space just off Milwaukie Ave by Oaks Park. This is a great place to go, or send your kids, for urban and wilderness adventures.
Rocket Masonry Stove Workshop, Feb. 15-17, including fire science, earthen masonry, and more. $295 includes local/organic meals, book, and three days of hands-on instruction.
Three-Layer Earthen Floor Workshop, Feb. 22-24, poured adobe from start to finish. $295 includes local and organic food, take-home booklet and tile, and three days of hands-on instruction.
For registration and details, see www.TrackersNW.com or email tony@trackersnw.com
There will also be a short version of the Fire Science portion during one of the TrackersNW $10 Adventures, February 3, 10am, same location.
Thanks! Hope to see you there.
