Update
Submitted by quietstorm on January 21, 2008 - 7:05pm.
Finally got settled in an apartment. The rottwieler was placed with one of my sisters. Haven't been able to do any improvements on property yet, but have been writing down ideas and researching.
I am living car less now. Expect to start using Flex Cars. I am riding my bike now. I have a Burley cargo trailer to make grocery runs. Rode to the store today, it's a 3-1/2 mile ride one way. Going to the store was riding against the wind, very slow. The cold wasn't so bad, the wind was hard to ride against. On the bright side, the ride home was with the wind so much easier. The time I really miss the car is when we are ill. That is tough. Took a spill on my bike in December when I wiped out on the streetcar track. Good to know that at 51 I can take a fall.
During the winter, (property is covered with snow), I am focused on thinking of ways to reduce consumption and trash. Would really like to reduce use of plastics. We use a lot of yogurt, so am going to start making yogurt at home. This is a beginning place. It really annoys me that yogurt containers are not recyclable here in Oregon.
I'll post the web-site that gives great directions on making cheese of all sorts.
The other idea is to make netted bags to contain produce. Just found directions for netting so will be able to start once I make a netting shuttle. I think I can make one from wire until I can order some from LACIS.
Next, we are going to get started with worm composting. I think it is something we can manage on the balcony.
Someone posted a suggestion for joining a eco-community. I like that idea and considered it, but I have a dog and cat and expect to always have a dog and cat.
