The Latest Power Play: New Developments in Hydrogen, Ocean Wave and 'Green Nuclear' Energy

Jose Reyes, Department Head Professor of Oregon State University's Department of Nuclear Engineering Radiation Health Physics; Annette von Jouanne, Professor of OSU's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and Roger Ely, Associate Professor of OSU's Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering

"There have been no significant discoveries of new oil since 2002," writes James Howard Kunstler in The Long Emergency, one of many dire tomes circulating about America's addiction to cheap energy and the impending consequences of its depletion. But while the widely cited social critic is skeptical of our country's ability to reduce its reliance on increasingly expensive and harder to extract fossil fuels, others in both academic and entrepreneurial circles are much more optimistic about recent developments on the road to feasible sources of renewable energy.

At the forefront of these critical advances are researchers at Oregon State University, including Jose Reyes, Annette von Jouanne and Roger Ely, who at City Club's July 28 Friday Forum will discuss their latest findings not only in relation to so-called "green" nuclear power, but also energy from hydrogen and ocean waves.

This week's Friday Forum, which is open to the public, will be held at the Governor Hotel (614 S.W. 11th Ave.). Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.; the program begins at 12:15 p.m. and concludes at 1:15 p.m. Luncheon tickets are $16 for City Club members and up to two guests, $20 for nonmembers. Lunch reservations can be made online at http://www.pdxcityclub.org/forums-events/friday-forums.php or by calling 503-228-7231, ext. 103, by 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2006 (members only may call the members' reservation message line at 503-241-9242). A limited number of coffee/tea tickets are $5 at the door. General seating, also available at the door, is free for members, $5 for nonmembers.
